How to Avoid Plagiarism in Professional Writing Professional writing demonstrates critical and creative thinking based on knowledge experience and research. When conducting professional writing it is important to avoid plagiarism at all cost. All schools have a plagiarism policy. For Union University in specific, plagiarism is listed under their Academic Integrity page and it states that not knowing is not an excuse. Plagiarism is considered to be unethical and immoral regardless of who commits it and I agree. Plagiarism is a Serious Offense in Professional Writing As stated in Merriam-Webster, when used as a verb, plagiarism means to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one’s own. Most of the time plagiarism is followed by a failing grade for the particular assignment but it can also lead up to failing the entire course. In some instances plagiarism can result in being kicked out of the institution as a whole. It simply boils down to the fact that any time you have conducted research the writer was able to access and use the written work of others. However we must give credit where credit is due (James Barkin, 1980).
